The stylish cockpit is almost flawless when it comes to ergonomics, and the seats are carefully designed to provide a middle-of-the-road compromise of cushioning and support. In back, the Honda Accord ties with the Camry for best-in-class rear-seat accommodations, and the seat design is such that just about any child's car seat can be installed with minimal hassle. Overall, you won't find a more balanced package in the family sedan segment. Available trim levels include VP (Value Package, sedan only), LX, LX Special Edition, EX and Accord Hybrid. The VP provides air conditioning, power windows and locks, a CD stereo, keyless entry and cruise control. The LX adds an upgraded audio system and power mirrors. You'd think by now this car would be an also-ran. The Honda Accord is entering the fifth year of its current model cycle. An all-new one is just over the horizon. Meanwhile, Toyota has just launched an all-new Camry for 2002, while Nissan Click for a larger 2002 Honda Accord picture has introduced an all-new and much larger Altima. And there's no shortage of competition from other automakers that compete fiercely for buyers of mid-size sedans. Accord buyers choose among four trim levels, sedan and coupe body styles, and V6 and four-cylinder engines. The four-door sedan and the sporty coupe are nearly identical from an engineering standpoint, though the Accord Coupe features some performance tweaks designed to make it more fun to drive. Honda freshened the Accord last year with a new engine hood and fascia up front and a new deck lid and tail lights in the rear. The overall effect is even more sharply chiseled than before. Thankfully, Honda Accord prices haven't increased significantly for 2003, despite all the changes. 2003 Accords with a four cylinder engine and a standard 5-speed manual transmission come in three trim levels: DX ($23,800), LX-G ($25,000), and EX-L ($28,500). For comparison, 2002 four cylinder Accord sedans were offered as LX ($23,000), SE ($24,800) and EX-L ($27,300). Two-door Honda Accord Coupes are offered in LX-G, EX-L and EX-V6 trim levels with the five-speed manual as standard and the five-speed automatic as optional. The EX-V6 Coupe comes with a standard 5-speed automatic, and next Spring, Honda will introduce a sporty new Accord Coupe EX-V6 with a 6 speed manual transmission, bigger brakes and standard 17 inch tires.

The Factory Performance package for the Accord EX V6 coupe debuted at SEMA 2002, featuring large 17 inch wheels, firmer suspension, prominent rear spoiler, ground effects and some special interior trim. This coupe is already a pleasure to drive in stock form, thanks to its slick six-speed manual shifter, which is one of the best in the business. Power remains the same, but hey, 240 hp is enough for a front-wheel-drive such as this, but it could do with a little more torque. Maybe its for the best. After all, a Maxima has more power and torque, but it is a handful when the throttle is floored. The package will be available through dealerships in the $4000-$5000 range.

Audio and climate control systems have also been significantly upgraded. EX 4-cylinder models with leather and all EX V6 models provide separate temperature controls for the driver and front passenger. Controls for the audio system, climate control and even the available next-generation Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System (NAVI) are consolidated into a single, easy-to-use display. The new NAVI system features voice activation for navigational tools, as well as audio and climate controls. A host of new safety features can be found in the Accord's interior. In addition to dual-stage front SRS airbags, side airbags are now available on the LX 4-cylinder models and standard on all EX and V6 models. As with all Honda and Acura vehicles, the front passenger's side airbag is controlled by an innovative sensing system that disables the airbag if the passenger is in its deployment path. Accord EX V6 models also come standard with a side curtain airbag system covering both the front and rear side windows in the event of a side impact.
