2005 Honda Accord Hybrid - User Reviews
The Accord and Accord Hybrid do stick to curvy mountain roads better than the Civic Hybrid (probably due to the Civic Hybrids 14 inch rims and thicker tires), and better than the ordinary Civic (probably due to tire tread issues). But compared to Civic there seems to be a lag before the car responds to steering-it doesn't so much lean as seemingly hesitate. (CR calls this 'plow').

January 5, 2004 - Those who have been dreaming of an Accord with V6 performance and the fuel economy of a Civic will soon be rewarded. Honda announced earlier today that it would be launching its V6 Accord Hybrid this autumn. The new model will use Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system and will achieve fuel economy equivalent to a four-cylinder Civic while providing V6 performance, thanks to its Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology. The V6 Accord Hybrid is clearly intended to compete with Toyota's mid-size Prius and it is poised to do so well, with projected fuel economy equal to the compact Civic in a mid-size package, and performance surpassing that of its Accord V6 Sedan sibling, already powerful at 240-horsepower. The good news isn't over. Along with the announcement of the 2005 Accord Hybrid, Honda promises to make use of its brand-new VCM technology in another model, to be introduced later this year.

The Hybrid has 255 hp from a V6 assisted by an electric motor. The gas engine essentially charges the electric batteries; there's no plug-in charging. The Hybrid V6 employs Honda's new Variable Cylinder Management system that deactivates three cylinders when cruising or decelerating to save fuel. All Accords come with ABS; V6 models add traction control. Front torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard. The manual-transmission V6 coupe has 17-inch wheels; other Accords have 16s or 15s. EX-L, EX V6, and Hybrid models come with leather upholstery, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats. Those models also offer a navigation system with voice control for some navigation, audio, and climate functions.

The Honda Accord already offers a powerful and efficient V6 engine in its sedan. With 240 horsepower, the Accord is comparable to its competitors, offering good performance and strong acceleration. While performance of the new Accord Hybrid is impressive, so are its fuel economy improvements. More stats: Fuel economy in the city is rated at 30 mpg; highway is 37 mpg. This is a 43 percent improvement in the city, 23 percent on the highway over the standard Accord V6 sedan. To counter the added weight from the electric motor and battery pack, the Accord Hybrid features an aluminum hood, aluminum suspension components and unique lightweight alloy wheels. In place of a spare tire, Honda provides a flat-tire repair system. Still, the Accord Hybrid weighs in about 175 lbs.

Honda puts the emphasis on the performance and targets the high-end buyers. Unlike traditional hybrid designs, the new Accord hybrid uses a more powerful engine than its non-hybrid counterpart. Together with the electric motor assist, the hybrid version is a much higher performance car than the regular Accord. The 2005 Accord Hybrid Sedan is also 4 in (102 mm) longer than the 2005 Accord Sedan.
