Honda is now offering the Honda Civic GX sedan to consumers along with a lease for a home refueling system. The GX is a natural gas-powered vehicle and up until now was only offered to fleet customers. The natural gas fueling station and Civic will be available in northern and southern California while the fueling station will be available in other markets that the Civic will not.

While natural gas has played a silent second to the hybrid buzz in alternatives to all-gasoline cars, enthusiastic owners make a positive case for their eco-friendly cars. The Honda Civic GX sedan is the only car available to consumers that operates entirely using natural gas. Available in select California dealerships since June 2005 for a sticker price of $21,425, the 2005 Civic GX received the cleanest emissions ratings from the EPA and a 2004 award as "America's Greenest Car" from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. The Civic GX sedan seats four passengers and has a driving range of between 200 and 220 miles. It shares the same platform with the Civic LX sedan and offers a similar array of safety and convenience features.

The popularity of natural gas-powered vehicles is gaining momentum as more states are expected to enact legislation to permit such vehicles in carpool lanes with just a single occupant. So Honda and FuelMaker are planning to capitalize on that by starting retail sales of the "Phill" refueling appliance and Civic GX natural gas vehicle beginning in California in spring 2005.

Today, the Civic GX remains the only vehicle certified in California as an "AT-PZEV" receiving Zero Emission Vehicle credits toward Californias ZEV Mandate. It's also the first and only vehicle certified to the all-new EPA Tier II, "Bin-2" standard. The natural gas Ford Crown Victoria, rated at ULEV, produces 52 percent less VOCs, 67 percent less NOx, and 86 percent less CO than the NLEV standard. The natural gas Honda Civic GX emits 98 percent less VOCs, 97 percent less CO, and 94 percent less NOx than the NLEV standard.
