The results? The natural gas Civic GX is by far the cleanest for regulated emissions. AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology-Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) combines a SULEV rating for the engine with zero evaporative emissions. The Civic GX is the cleanest of the four in terms of criteria pollutants. Emissions created during combustion are dependent partly upon the chemical compositon of the fuel, and natural gas has a much simpler, and lower-carbon, chemical structure than gasoline or diesel. It also has a lower energy content and so requires additional fuel consumption for equivalent performance, as you can see in the chart above.

Honda of America Manufacturing has launched production of the Civic GX natural gas vehicle, the first fully mass-produced dedicated natural gas passenger car, at its plant in East Liberty. Honda sasy the Civic GX has the cleanest internal combustion engine ever developed. It emits one-tenth the hydrocarbon emissions of the stringent Ultra Low Emission Vehicle standard and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20 percent while retaining superior fuel economy. The Civic GX runs exclusively on compressed natural gas, produces more horsepower than the gasoline powered Civic LX and has a driving range of 200 miles.
