2003 Honda Civic Hybrid : Page 4
The title of this sub-section speaks for itself. The primary source for the batteries' recharge capability lies in the regenerative braking power of the car. During braking, the CHRG gauge on the dashboard maxes out as the batteries are charged. The Civic Hybrid has front disc and rear drum brakes, which are like brakes on any other car. When the brakes are applied, the electric motor acts as the caris `ibrakesi by turning the forward kinetic energy of the car into spinning energy for the motor. This spinning generates electricity which is then stored in the batteries. When braking needs to be more sudden or quick, both the IMA `ibrakesi and the real brakes stop the car. In a driveris experience there is almost nothing more frustrating than having your car die on you at the light. There is stress and anxiety that builds up within because you are aware that people are waiting for you to get the car started and stop holding them up. It is that fear that makes the auto-stop feature on the Civic hybrid the most interesting feature with which to get comfortable. Several criteria must be met before the auto-stop feature will engage on the Civic Hybrid. Some of them are: engine temperature must be high enough, brake pressure must be high enough, battery power must be above 50%, and the climate control system must be off or in ECON mode. Once all of these conditions are met, the car will automatically turn off when the brakes are being applied and the car is going less than 10 mph. This situation is typically encountered only when rolling up to a stop light or stop sign. Will something a lot better be out next year? The fears are a lot like those with buying computer technology. So, it is extremely comforting to look inside the Civic Hybrid and realize that it looks just like any other car out there on the streets.
