The Truth About Cars - Civic Si
Heres the thing: the 2004 Honda Civic Si has already been written off. Somehow, the car that popped the cherry for Americas import racers has become an also-ran, outgunned by a new generation of high-horsepower compacts like the Subaru WRX and Dodge SRT-4. Hondas legendary hatchback now finds itself in an awkward and unfamiliar position: on the outside looking in. The Honda Si costs $19,070. Or not. Weve heard of new Sis selling for 25% off list and untitled 03s going for even less. Despite deep discounts, once-loyal Civic customers are withholding their pocketbooks, opting for faster, cheaper and better equipped cars like the Mazda3 and Scion tC. Quite simply, the Honda Civic Si lacks the goods. If Honda wants to put enthusiasts into a factory tuned Civic, they need to face facts: class standards have been raised. Todays market is full of quick, fine-handling pocket rockets. Its time to ditch the Si and bring on the no-holds-barred Type-R (selling in the UK).

Arguably, the Civic Si sedan has the best fuel economy of the lot, but buyers looking for fuel economy will likely choose the 115 horsepower DX, SE, or LX Civic sedans. The Si Sedan is intended for those who want more performance and sporty looks. The interior of the 2004 Civic Si Sedan is well-equipped, and controls are typically Honda-simple and easy to operate. The three attractive metal-rimmed gauges have extra large white-on-black numerals, and at night, are lit with a glowing blue perimeter.
2002-2004 Honda Civic Si - Modern Racer - Auto Archive
The British-built 2004 Honda Civic Si hatchback carries on from the 2002 and 2003 model years with minor changes. Most obvious are the new multi-element headlights, new front bumper, side skirts and partially-colorless tail-lights. The new look definitely makes the Si appear sportier. The 2004 version also gets redesigned 16-inch alloy wheels which should improve its cornering ability. The older models sported pathetic 15-inch wheels. The usual Si touches include a mesh front grille, rear roof spoiler, dual-tipped chrome exhaust and a power moonroof.

The styling of the Honda Civic Si hatchback seems to polarize people. Some think it's ugly; others love it and are quick to defend it. It's edgy and wedgy. The huge, flat windshield is steeply raked. The nose slopes radically downward, giving the car excellent aerodynamics and driver visibility. Its unique mesh grille is framed by huge triangular headlamps which, like those of the coupe and sedan, have been updated for 2004. You can short-shift through the gears: snick, waahh, snick, whaah, snick, whaah. Downshifting short is fun, too. Barely push in the clutch pedal, and casually flick the lever into the next-lower cog. The Civic Si's transmission ratios seem perfectly matched to the engine. The ratios are close together, allowing the driver to keep the engine in the power band. Out on the highway, the Civic Si engine is very responsive, giving it good performance for passing. It accelerates from legal highway speeds to super-legal speeds fairly quickly.

On the outside the Civic Si is really a boy racer, with its kit and style, but on the inside it's a totally civilized four-to-five seater with room for your luggage, books, equipment or whatever it is that you lug around.

The DX trim is the one dealers use to draw in customers; even basic features like air conditioning, power mirrors and a tachometer are either not available or optional. If you can swing it, the LX is the better choice, and you'll get most of the features you need, including cruise control, air, power windows and a CD player. Going with the EX nets you a moonroof, antilock brakes, keyless entry, variable wipers, a driver seat-height adjuster and 15-inch wheels. There are also four specialty models: the HX coupe, GX sedan, Si hatchback and Hybrid sedan. The frugal HX coupe is equipped similarly to the DX coupe, while the natural gas-fueled GX sedan matches closely to the LX sedan. The Civic Si hatchback comes just one way and it boasts, as compared to other Civics, standard rear disc brakes, a sport-tuned suspension, sport seats and special gauges.
