Honda 400EX
The 400EX's powerplant was derived from Honda's highly successful XR400 off-road motorcycle and is the most powerful four-stroke engine ever found in a Honda ATV. The 397cc four-valve, single-cylinder engine features Honda's patented Radial Four Valve Combustion Chamber (RFVC) technology and the same 85mm bore and 70mm stroke as its XR cousin. However, Honda wasn't satisfied with just stuffing an XR400 engine in the new EX. The piston and rings share the same part number as the XR, but the similarities end there. Big Red altered the ignition timing and cam profile to give the engine mongo amounts of torque and the low-end power necessary to get the wide contact patch of the Ohtsu radial tires moving quickly. They beefed up the crankshaft and altered the transmission gear ratios to better suit an ATV application. The transmission gears and bearings on the EX were also beefed up and made thicker to better handle the loads placed on the engine by the larger contact patch of the two 11" wide ATV tires as compared to the single, skinny motorcycle tire found on the XR. The XR's clutch is a known weak point, so Honda beefed it up on the EX via thicker clutch plates and basket. The new 400EX features a round- and oval-tube steel frame with a trick removable rear subframe for easy rear end maintenance. The EX's long-travel suspension exceeds that which was found on the legendary 250R.
