CanadianDriver: Consumer Reports picks Honda Accord Hybrid as top ...
That's good, but not good enough to justify the price premium. The Accord Hybrid sells for $36,990, $3,390 more than a comparably equipped non-hybrid V-6 Accord EX. So even with today's higher gas prices, it could take as many as 10 years for the hybrid system to pay for itself at the pump. Again, look at the numbers. According to the 2005 Fuel Consumption Guide from Natural Resources Canada, an Accord Hybrid will cost you $966 a year at the pump. A V-6 Accord with an automatic transmission runs $1,297 a year for gas. That said, the Accord Hybrid is loaded with just about every uptown goody available on the Accord line, including leather seats, a rear lip spoiler, a fancy stereo and power-operated seats, door locks, windows.

JS Online: Auto review: 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid
When both operate together for maximum performance, the result is 255 horsepower, or 15 horses more than in the Honda Accord V6. With the increase in power, the Accord Hybrid can sprint to 60 miles an hour in just over seven seconds, about a half-second faster than the V6 model. That's despite the fact that the Hybrid, even with some aluminum components, weighs 117 pounds more than the Accord EX V6. Because of the sport orientation, the Accord Hybrid has a rough ride on pockmarked surfaces. But the suspension stiffness translates into flat cornering, with little body roll, on twisting roadways.

January 5, 2004 - Those who have been dreaming of an Accord with V6 performance and the fuel economy of a Civic will soon be rewarded. Honda announced earlier today that it would be launching its V6 Accord Hybrid this autumn. The new model will use Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system and will achieve fuel economy equivalent to a four-cylinder Civic while providing V6 performance, thanks to its Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology. The V6 Accord Hybrid is clearly intended to compete with Toyota's mid-size Prius and it is poised to do so well, with projected fuel economy equal to the compact Civic in a mid-size package, and performance surpassing that of its Accord V6 Sedan sibling, already powerful at 240-horsepower. The good news isn't over. Along with the announcement of the 2005 Accord Hybrid, Honda promises to make use of its brand-new VCM technology in another model, to be introduced later this year.

The Accord Hybrid uses a modified version of the electric power steering system used in the Honda S2000 sports car. It reduces the amount of steering feedback and it feels different - slightly less responsive - than the steering on the conventional Accord.

Because the 2005 Accord Hybrid is only the fifth model to come on the market - after the Insight, Civic, Toyota Prius and Ford Escape - its expected that reviews will spend some time on the technology. The 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid will sell for about $30,000 when it becomes available Dec. 3. Thats about $3,000 more than a comparably equipped Accord EX V-6. With the federal tax deduction of $2,000 still in effect for this year, plus assorted state credits, the premium is reduced.

The Accord Hybrid is the first V6 application of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist technology and the first hybrid vehicle to employ Variable Cylinder Management technology. Developed by Honda, VCM allows for the deactivation of three of the engine's six cylinders under certain conditions - such as highway cruising - to deliver even greater fuel efficiency with no sacrifice in performance.
