Oddly, the Pilot is supposed to be the less sporty of the two. Supposedly its steering and suspension are softer. Also, while the MDX's shifter is on the console, the Pilot's is on the steering column. The Pilot has Honda's all-wheel-drive system standard. This system powers the front wheels under normal conditions, only directing power automatically to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip. Very useful for slick roads. Not meant for off-road. A system that permanently drives all four wheels, especially with a bit of bias towards the rear, would lend the chassis a sportier feel.

2003 Honda Pilot - The Car Connection
Honda plans on selling 80,000 of its new Pilot SUVs during the 2003 model year. Just 80,000. For an utterly competent, vice-less mainstream SUV that's got a big "H" in its grille and shares bloodlines with the ludicrously successful Odyssey minivan and Acura MDX? Honda could sell 80,000 of these things in a month without distributing them outside Southern California's Inland Empire. In a world where so many bland SUVs look alike, the bland Pilot looks an awful lot like a lot of other bland SUVs. Maybe it's best to think of the Pilot's looks as suburban camouflage - it's built to blend in. What the Pilot ultimately does is pack almost as much utility into an SUV as there is in a minivan. It's nearly the perfect vehicle for people who need an Odyssey but who wouldn't be caught dead driving one.

Nash Rambler's Product Reviews
The new Pilot is all Honda, and in fact, is a lot of Hondas and a bit of the Acura luxury division as well. Its essentially a plainer Jane version of the Acura MDX SUV, sharing major items such as the engine, transmission, and basic chassis. That's a well-respected family tree, and enables savvy Pilot buyers to drive the equivalent of a luxury SUV for a few thousand less. While the top-end Acura MDX sells for around $40,000, the most expensive Honda Pilot sells for about $32,500. The Pilot is one of the wider vehicles in its class, providing lots of room and configuration options for families. In addition to firm front bucket seats, it features split-folding second and third row seats. Although it is a bit difficult for adults to reach that third row, and the third row cuts into cargo area, it adds some versatility. With the third seat in use, you can pile more kids into the Pilot, and still have room for several grocery bags, a few soft suitcases, or the golf clubs. Theres even a shallow, covered floor compartment behind the third seat for stashing stuff.
usnews.com: Auto reviews: 2003 Honda Pilot (10/1/02)
KID MARKS: The Pilot seems designed by people with kids of their own. Post-toddlers will want to claim the third row as their own, which is a great arrangement since it's a bit too cramped for grown-ups. There's also an extra tether hook for securing a car seat back there. The second row is plenty spacious too, with an "activity tray" on the armrest that could function as a food holder or a game table or a barrier between two quarreling rugrats.
