The rear seats flip forward in one step and hide flush to the floor with clever manual levers, turning the Murano into a two-seat wagon with a big cargo area. It measures about the same length as the Honda Pilot's with all of its seats down. Murano's load height is now lower than the Pilot's, however. The bulky cargo cover flaps around and takes up room.

The Nissan Murano drives almost as well as a luxury sports sedan, but carries cargo like a Honda Pilot sport-utility. The Murano is a crossover vehicle, designed to haul cargo like a sport-utility, but ride and drive like a car. The Murano is different from most crossovers, however, in that it's biased toward the car part of the equation. It offers more of a car-like ambience and handles better on pavement than competitors like the Pilot and Toyota Highlander. Options come packaged in ascending groups. Both the SL and SE offer a Premium package ($1,500), which adds roof rails, adjustable pedals, a cargo cover and net, and a more powerful stereo with subwoofer and auto volume control. A cargo net and window-shade-style retractable cargo cover come in the optional SL Premium Package and the SE Popular Package. The cover is a unique approach to the problem posed by adjustable backrests. Most vehicles with this feature provide several mounting points for the cargo shade, to accommodate the backrests' travel. The problem is that the shade must be relocated before the backrests can recline - or after they're tilted forward, to close the gap. This also allows no variance between the two backrest sections. The Murano solves the problem by mounting the cover mechanism far back and attaching retractable shade sections between it and the backrests.
