XT is the pick in the small SUV class due to its best-in-class quickness. The Honda Pilot defends its 2003 best-of status with surprising roominess for its size, cargo flexibility and general competence. Aug. 2002 reviews rating Frank Markus takes a detailed look at four full-sized SUVs priced under $45,000. The vehicles are all very large V8-powered SUVs that can seat at least seven. All have prodigious off-road and towing abilities. Large unit-body SUVs, such as the Honda Pilot (which is based on a minivan frame) were not included. The Chevrolet Tahoe does well in this test with a strong engine, smooth ride (relative to the other vehicles in this class) and excellent traction.
